Dr. Perumal has a Master's degree (MD) in Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, and has also successfully completed a Diploma in Child Health. During his three-year MD training at Madras Medical College's Institute of Thoracic Medicine, Dr. Perumal was also associated with the Government Hospital for Thoracic Medicine, Tambaram Sanatorium, and National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis (NIRT), ICMR, Chennai.
Dr. Sundararaja Perumal is familiar with all aspects of Pulmonology. He is skilled and experienced in the treatment of tuberculosis, drug-resistant tuberculosis, asthma, COPD, lung cancer, pneumonia, pulmonary infections in immunity compromised persons, interstitial lung disorders and pleural diseases. His technical skills have been honed through intense training in fibre-optic bronchoscopy (FOB), covering both conventional and video bronchoscopy – he is proficient in FOB procedures such as bronchial wash, brush biopsy, trans-bronchial lung biopsy, foreign body removal and bronchial toileting. He has also obtained training in pleural procedures such as thoracentesis, intercostal drainage and pleurodesis.
As a teacher, Dr. Perumal has experience in conducting classes for medical postgraduates, undergraduates and paramedical students. He has guided several postgraduate students in their dissertations, and their oral/poster presentations at national conferences such as NAPCON, NATCON, etc. He has a commitment towards meting out quality treatment to his patients and to this end, he follows established departmental policies and procedures, continuous quality improvement objectives, as well as conforming to safety, environmental and infection control standards.
